1.Solid Electrolyte/Precursor: Li₂S can be processed into sulfide-based solid electrolytes (e.g., Li₂S–P₂S₅ glasses or Li₃PS₄-type argyrodites), which exhibit high ionic conductivity (up to 10⁻² S·cm⁻¹ at room temperature), negligible electronic conductivity, and good mechanical deformability. This facilitates stable lithium-ion transport while suppressing dendrite growth.
2.Cathode Active Material: In sulfur-based all-solid-state batteries, Li₂S serves as a lithium-source cathode material paired with lithium-metal anodes. It delivers a high theoretical capacity of 1166 mAh·g⁻¹ and operates without the formation of soluble polysulfides—a common issue in liquid electrolyte systems—thus minimizing capacity fade and shuttle effects.
3.Interface Stabilizer: When integrated into composite cathodes, Li₂S helps form stable interphases with sulfide solid electrolytes, reducing interfacial resistance and improving cycling stability.
4.Enabler for Lithium-Metal Anodes: By replacing flammable liquid electrolytes, Li₂S-based solid electrolytes allow the safe use of lithium-metal anodes, pushing battery energy density beyond 500 Wh·kg⁻¹.
